Tippeliga round 23: Vålerenga hand Rosenborg the title

Tue, Sep 1, 2009

Norway, Tippeliga

Ten points ahead with a game in hand and still undefeated, let’s face it, there is no way Rosenborg is going to throw this away. But the relegation-battle is shaping up to be pretty damned fierce, and after a very bad run Mad Martin finally got a big win as he continues to cling to his job in spite of it all..

To say that Vålerenga‘s 2-1 win over Molde was a big win for Martin Andresen would be like saying Usain Bolt is a bit fast, like saying Hitler was a bit of a prat or indeed like saying Dag-Eilev Fagermo has a bit of an ego. Calling it an understatement would in itself be an understatement. After seven straight defeats the much maligned manager finally led his team to a win, and that against the team that in the last couple of months has been demonstratively the best in the land. Andresen has now set his sights on copying last season, namely by sweeping a poor league campaign under the carpet with a cup-triumph: “We’ve beat Molde in two out of two games this season, I’m hoping we can take a third victory in the upcoming semifinal,” an understandably happy Martin told Dagbladet after the game. The win puts some desperately needed breathing space between Vålerenga and the relegation-battle, while it effectively ends any lingering hopes Molde may have had of catching Rosenborg at the top.

Mad Martin and Vålerenga’s win should have dominated the various media-outlets over the weekend, but much of their thunder was stolen by the return of space hoppper-shaped manager Tom Nordlie. Brought in at considerable expense to rescue Fredrikstad from relegation, Nordlie now has one less game in which to do so as Tromsø casually swept his men aside and won 2-0. Now, for many in the media jumping up and down on Nordlie is a favorite past time, because A – he’s bouncy and B – his unapologetically forthright ways tends to annoy people. Still, TV2′s man in Tromsø branding him an idiot for failing to get his message across to the players right away was perhaps unnecessarily harsh..

37 year old Vidar Riseth has been tasked with shoring up Strømsgodset‘s leaky defense, but while the old guy when to work at the back it was the youngsters who came through for Godset up front against Odd Grenland. 19 year old Marcus Pedersen scored a fine opener, 2-0 came after some sublime wing-play from 18 year old Mohammed Keita, while 23 year old midfielder Fredrik Nordkvelle added a third. It didn’t matter then that Riseth engaged in a spot of wrestling with Odd’s Hungarian giant Peter Kovacs and Morten Fevag put away the resulting penalty, a possibly season-defining 3-1 win was secured for Ronny Deila’s dangerous devotees.

It was a case of same old same old at Viking stadion, where hosts Viking continued to be significantly less than the sum of their parts and Sandefjord continued to be so much more. The 2-2 draw included incidents like another bad blooper from Viking-goalkeeper and serial-gaffer Thomas Myhre, Viking’s unadventurous right-back Håkon Skogseid scoring with a mis-hit cross and their slumbering striker Peter Ijeh scoring a late equalizer.

Bergen based bullies Brann are very much in the hunt for medals after beating Start 1-0, even though at no point this season have they looked like a particularly impressive team (home games against Lyn don’t count). What they are is a tightly organized and hard working bunch with a couple of quality individual players who can swing tight games in their favor. In short, they look very much like manager Steinar Nilsen’s Tromsø-team of last season. Go figure.

Kjetil Rekdal’s Aalesund have been reasonably comfortable this season, but a recent bad run of results has cemented them firmly in the relegation-mire and 1-1 at home against fellow struggles Bodø/Glimt was rather less than what they needed. “We have to take more points off the teams around us in the table,” muttered a slightly annoyed Redkal, who unfortunately for neutrals will probably be too busy trying to keep his team up to do or say anything entertainingly outrageous during the remainder the season.

Stabæk were afflicted by an almost Tottenham-esque bout of stomach-problems with several players being sick during their match against Lillestrøm. Maybe just a natural reaction for people from the posh bit of Oslo who are forced to spend time in Lillestrøm, or maybe just a stomach-bug, but anyway it didn’t stop them from picking up a 2-1 win that puts them in fourth place, one point off Odd Grenland. An impressive position to be in at this point if you consider their fairly terrible start to the season.

Finally, Rosenborg actually managed to live up to expectations and give Lyn a proper 4-1 thwacking. Really not a whole lot more to say about that.

  1. Arch Bell Says:

It almost feels as if Start has been in 6th place with 32 points now for months. They are struggling to put together any kind of offense.

Damn shame for Molde as a couple weeks ago I thought they might hang around with Rosenborg and pull off a comeback. Valerenga needed that W badly.

The Lyn defense and the offside trap are two things that don’t work well together.

    Good recap. Enjoyed it!

  2. Fireman451 Says:

Thank you Troy Perkins and Vålerenga!

RBK still needs to focus on the goal of going undefeated and hopefully learn from their horrible 2009 Europa League showing when they enter Champions League play next year.

Is Rade Prica signed on for next season?

  3. Crazy Al Says:

It looks like all but third is decided at the top. And Fireman, I’m with you. Hopefully, a tough RBK will show up for the Champions League.

The bottom is setting up for a really fun final weekend. I’d hate to be the third from the bottom Tippe team playing the Adecco promotion challengers. As tight as the Adecco is, any of the three teams challenging will be very battle tested and probably on a pretty good playing streek. All that should make November fun.

Speaking of the Adecco. Its Tuesday game. What a nightmare!!!!!! Thank God I could only hear it on the internet.

Finally, my Norwegian sources tell me that Arch Bell is a Texan, like me. Go figure. Texans and Norwegian football. Now, that is a great combination.

  4. Lars Says:

It`s kinda sad i love that Rosenborg is doing so well but it does kill the excitement in the league and with no cup or european competison i hope Rosengborg use some of the last games to give there younger guys some play time.

  5. Fireman451 Says:

I think Rosenborg should keep busy in the offseason and play some friendlies in the US (California or Florida) against some MLS sides since both leagues will be finished over the winter.

  6. Lars Sivertsen Says:

Fireman: Interesting idea, I’d be interested in seeing that to be honest. Rade Prica is signed up yes, that really was a cracking tree goals this round wasn’t it? Did my fantasy-team a world of good..

Al: You won’t thank me for this, but I had a bit of money on Kongsvinger to win by more than one goal.. :P

  7. Lars Sivertsen Says:

Arch: Thanks, a pleasure as always. It was such a crucial win for Vålerenga and Martin Andresen in particular, it’ll give the whole place a lift and they can still salvage something from this season by winning the cup (as they did last season)..

  8. Håkon S. Says:

Well, if this turns Enga around a bit, it will be so déja vu from this spring, it’s bound to arise a few superstitions. Martin was having a really crucial match after a series of bad results (of course, back then, we thought he’d be screwed over if he lost another game. Now we know better). The match was against Molde, who right before then was reigning supreme in gameplay in their matches. Who won? Enga. And then they went on to climb the league for a while.

And what just happened now? Don’t have to tell you. Of course, we still haven’t seen signs of Enga truly turn around and win a few matches, but the setup is certainly there now. And if there’s anything sports reporters and us bloggers like, it’s silly patterns that looks cool, but aren’t really all that significant. ;)

  9. Crazy Al Says:

Lars, At least someone got something positive out of the Kongsvinger game. :-) You should read the editorial ripping Alta in the Altaposten. Yikes. It must have been worse in person than on the radio. Thank God for a short week and not taking time off for international games!
