Haka and JJK postponed their League Cup match last Friday, because it was forecast to be too cold for them to play. The Finnish FA advises that games are not played when the temperature is below -10, so given the -15 weathe rforecast last week, the best option was to call it off and reschedule for this Tuesday. Great plan, only…. it was even colder this week. The teams had a discussion, thought about potential new dates, and decided ‘fuck it, let’s play’. So in -20 temperatures they took to the field in Valkeakoski, and JJK recorded a 1-0 win. “My body is okay, but my face, fingers and toes are frozen,” JJK defender Juha Pasoja said afterwards. I was present at both your “frozen football” matches. I have to say the game in Pori was quite okay temperature-wise, didn’t even wear a hat and no frostbites as a result, but the one played at Sahara is a different story. I was feeling quite okay towards the end of the game, but only because my fingers and toes had become too numb to feel the bite of the cold. Makes me wonder if it’s very healthy to play football at that low a temperature…

It’s pretty mental isn’t it? I’m disappointed I missed both games, as I’ve been to Sahara many a time and moaned about the springtime mud and slush. It’s good to get a little variety into your League cup weather whining, I always think.

Indeed. I should probably point out that ‘fuck it, let’s play’ is not a direct quote.

Unbelievable.
And I’d been complaining about the rain in Rome…!
