Scandinavians endured a mixed weekend as most of the football concerns were on matters such as transfers rather than what was actually happening on the pitch. Five Scandinavian stars managed to get on the score sheet, others outlined their value to their clubs as their main assets(notably Pedersen) and some just had a pain in the jaw with what was going on around them.

It was billed as the day Finland’s young players would come of age, and those that played certainly did that. Roni Porokara was a constant threat to Beck on Finland’s left wing, Kasper Hämäläinen linked up on the other wingand was not overawed in front of a crowd 12 times larger than his club’s average [...]

*Scroll down for highlights* It wasn’t exactly a momentous occasion. In the run-up to the game someone had scrawled “PALLOLIITTO HAISTAKAA VITTU” (“Finnish FA get to fuck”) on the wall outside the Football Association’s offices, evidence of the hostility Finland’s football decision makers can face when their performance is deemed unsatisfactory. The hostility comes from small [...]

Finland were so utterly rubbish in the matches against Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein that it simply defies belief. Wednesday night goes down among the worst nights in the history of Finnish football. It wasn’t just that it was bad, it was bloody embarrassing. If this is the best that Mr. Baxter can provide with the selection [...]

The first round of the DFB Pokal, played over the weekend, offered Germany’s Nordic players a chance to test their fitness in more challenging settings than they’ve seen over the summer. The biggest clubs enter in the first round, giving up home advantage to the minnows as the competition tries to encourage upsets. This first [...]

Stakes are high on Wednesday night as Finland and Russia take on the pitch at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium for their World Cup 2010 qualifier. With Germany having the upper hand in group 4 and Wales, Azerbaijan and Liechenstein pretty much out of contention, the stage is set for Finland and Russia to seal the fate [...]

After a lot of tut-tutting over Craig Bellamy’s idiotic comments, the Finnish squad is looking a little bit threadbare as they prepare for the vitally important friendly against Norway. Lillestrom keeper Otto Fredriksson will watch the game from the sidelines so as to avoid aggravating a troublesome knee. Niklas Moisander has decided he doesn’t want [...]

Finland are suffering from the usual injury worries, with Teemu Tainio and Mika Väyrynen out, but Jari Litmanen’s fitness is a welcome boost for Stuart Baxter. The FC Lahti striker, who scored the first ever goal at the Millenium stadium in 2000, has recovered from a clash of heads that saw him withdraw midway through [...]

This article is in the new ‘Oh Sami Sami’ brochure, published to celebrate Sami Hyypiä’s ten years at Liverpool. When Finns talk about their greatest footballers, Sami Hyypiä is always near the top of the list. Although he has won European trophies during his time at Liverpool, Finland have not reached the same heights. Hyypiä’s international [...]

Highlights here The early stages of this game resembled a cavalry charge, with Portuguese attackers swarming all over the Finnish defence and shooting at will. There was some desperate last-ditch defending, some decent saves from Jussi Jääskeläinen, but most of all a lot of wasteful finishing from the Portuguese strikers. Deco broke clear down the right [...]

Just last night I thought Finnish football had changed considerably as the U-21 team overturned a deficit to come out as victors against Austria, but little did I know. Tonight, Finland went down 3-0 against Russia and to make it Finnish enough, the first two goals were Finland’s own goals and Arshavin’s strike that settled [...]

[youtube=http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=EXDBP4GrX00] William’s report is here The game kicked off with a bit of an embarrassing anthem disruption from the North Curve. They kept singing while the Helsinki Police band were giving a decent rendition of Azərbaycan Respublikasının Dövlət Himni, the Azeri national anthem. They’re done great stuff recently, and there was a gushing article in yesterday’s Ilta-Sanomat, [...]

Finland were without Jari Litmanen when they took on European Championship runners-up Germany at the Olympic Stadium, but they still managed to put in an excellent performance in Stuart Baxer’s first competitive game in charge, drawing the match 3-3. EGAN RICHARDSON HELSINKI TIMES FINLAND PLAYED without Jari Litmanen and scored three times against the second best team in [...]

Okay, editing the previous post is not really going to work so well, so I will endeavour to produce one of those journalist-writing-about-journalists pieces that do so much to increase the sum of human knowledge. As mentioned before, William Moore’s report is the best place to start. I did something for soccernet, but it is [...]

Stuart Baxter was on Arto Nyberg’s chat show tonight. Nyberg has a standard format of three guests per show, and when they are not Finnish speakers they usually come on last, and Nyberg interprets after each answer. At least that’s what they did when beer expert Michael Jackson was on last year, but this [...]
